1982 Formula 1 Driver’s Strike
29 drivers spent the night locked in a room together in protest of new clauses in their contracts requiring them to disclose their financial information, remain on one team for a period of three years, and speak no criticism against the FIA.
At the first race of the season, the South African Grand Prix, just hours before the first official practice, Niki Lauda and Didier Peroni picked up drivers one by one in a bus and escorted them to the Sunnyside Park Hotel for a conference.
The Grand Prix Driver’s Association commissioned the largest conference room in the hotel and had mattresses brought in for the drivers. Elio de Angelis and Gilles Villeneuve took turns at the piano, playing classical Chopin and ragtime Scott Joplin, respectively. Lauda told jokes. Bruno Giacomelli drew cartoons.
The only driver to leave the conference was Teo Fabi, who was rumored to have climbed out the bathroom window. According to Keke Rosberg, “He ran like a chicken and lost our respect forever - not because he left, but because he betrayed us.”
Due to the fact that there were fewer beds than drivers, many men shared accommodations. As they prepared to sleep, someone joked about what sort of super baby would result from the night.
When recalling the night later, Lauda had a laugh: "I would like to see all the F1 constructors sleeping together in the same bed. I was sharing a bed with Patrese. Someone next to Rosberg was snoring until Villeneuve put a blanket over him. But all the time we stayed together… we stayed together because we wanted to.“
In the end, their contracts were reverted back to their original state, and the FIA’s Court of Appeals criticized FISA for not allowing the drivers a say in the matter. The two-race suspension the drivers were penalized with was changed to a one-race suspension, and all fines against the drivers were reduced to $5,000.
